Influencer marketing has become a powerful tool for brands and businesses to connect with their target audiences in a more authentic and engaging way.

Social media is constantly evolving year after year and more people are utilizing the different platforms for various reasons. Businesses use Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and many other platforms to advertise and connect with their customers. Consumers are on social media for an extended amount of time and this allows business to use advertisements, videos, and influencers to reach their audience.
An influencer is “someone who has the power to affect the purchasing decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with his or her audience” (Geyser, W., 2023). When businesses partner with influencers, they could potentially attract new members or clients that they normally couldn’t reach. Consumers may view influencers as relatable; therefore, they would trust their opinions regarding a product or service. “In 2022, the influencer industry reached $16.4 billion” (Leung et al., 2022). Influencers are gaining thousands of followers and large businesses now utilize them as the face of their brand. Brands like Dunkin’ Donuts and Nike have partnered with influencers who are well know on TikTok and Facebook. Dunkin’ Donuts has a successful partnership with influencer, Charli D’Amelio who has helped Dunkin Donuts increase their presence on TikTok (Zheng, 2022).

Identifying the Right Influencers
The foundation of a successful influencer marketing campaign starts with selecting the right influencers. Whether the business is small or a large corporation, influencers can utilize their audience or fan base to inform others about your product or service. Brands should identify individuals who align with their values and target demographics. Look for influencers who are seen as experts within industry and who receive positive interactions. This alignment ensures that the influencer’s audience is more likely to be interested in your products or services. According to Agarwal (2023), influencer marketing allows brands to tap into the trust influencers have built with their followers, resulting in more authentic connections.

Define Clear Campaign Objectives
It’s crucial to define clear objectives before hiring or partnering with an influencer. Are you aiming to boost brand awareness, drive sales, or enhance your social media presence? Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals will provide a roadmap for your campaign’s success. Aligning your objectives with the influencer’s strengths and your target audience’s preferences, you can maximize the impact of your campaign.

Influencer marketing can be a powerful avenue for brands to connect with their target audiences authentically. As it continues to evolve, staying updated on industry trends and audience preferences is essential for success in this dynamic field. Small business owners can partner with influencers to increase sales and build their clientele.
