The Importance of Daily Cleansing

Imagine if you went days without washing. You would soon develop an odor and the stench would grow stronger as days went by. Cleansing is a vital step in our daily lives to remove dirt, odor, debris, bacteria and anything that doesn’t belong on our skin. Daily washing removes these impurities to give the skin a fresh look (Lankerani, 2021). What about spiritual cleansing? What impurities do we need to wash out of our soul? Although we might not smell an odor on ourselves, our flesh could stink to God.

Soul Cleansing

We often pray during difficult times, mistakes or pain for God to remove or cleanse us from those things that mean us harm. We may ask during that moment and then attempt to turn away and go about our daily lives. We never revisit or remind God what his word says about the situation. According to I John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” We sin daily, so we must come openly to God and repent from our sins daily. He doesn’t make a record of our wrongdoings, but we have to come before him and repent. We know the enemy is out to kill, steal and destroy. He sets traps, distractions, and temptation for us to fail. Praying and studying God’s word is an armor of protection. The traps or weapons may form, but they won’t prosper.

What if we could see the sins on our bodies? Would we see words like liar, cheater, manipulator, or gossiper on our skin?. If we were able to see every bad word we spoke against someone, would we then remember to cleanse our souls daily? Can you imagine walking around your job and people seeing “liar” or “thief” on your forehead? There would be an immediate feeling of shame that would overwhelm you. We should make it our mission to make time for God and cleanse our souls.

Daily Prayer: Our Soap and Water

We cleanse our bodies of dirt and debris daily and sometimes multiple times a day. We use soap, water and a cloth to wash our bodies. When it comes to cleansing our souls, our spiritual soap and water is praying and God’s word. Praying is the soap that our soul needs to remove any uncleanliness and odor. It changes what was once there with something more cleaner, hopeful, and powerful. God’s word is our water. We need it to survive and when we pair it with the right thing, it turns into something else. If we pair God’s word with faith, then we get hope and vision. We should expect God’s word to come to pass because we know he’s not a man that he should lie. In this instance, if we pair God’s word with prayer, then we will cleanse our soul. Cleansing the soul builds wisdom and boldness in God. It prepares us to walk through this world with God’s protection.
